laidlaw - welcome to the world of ebay and shipping.

thunderandwind - tell them to check out using the link on the emailed invoice...should work okay.

tinsniper - yes, there is. Go to help. Type non performance in the search bar. Open the first link. Open the additional information area. Click the report link.

Is there no longer a "non performing seller complaint" or is negative feedback the only way. I won an auction 160400499757 & now seller states he lost the item, lol yeah ok. Darn these sellers I wish they would start the price at what they would at least want for the item instead of all this crap.

I just sold an item on eBay and the buyer is having trouble paying. I am registered with Paypal and am in Canada. The buyer is trying to pay by going through the checkout and said that the shipping is not included and it would not let him pay. I have sent them an invoice with the shipping amount and the total. Does anyone know why it would be a problem? Thanks

Its cheaper for me to ship to the US or to China.. than it is to ship within Canada.
Is this the same for the US? I doubt it...
Booooo Canada.. lol.
No wonder most sales for Canadian ebay sellers IS to the US... cause most Canadians wont pay these stupid prices.. lol

I don't use the calculator much, but I have been having problems with the few listings I do have. I have stopped using it for International and US sales. The Canada part seems fine.

As a work around, consider adding 50 or 60 cents to your Handling fee to cover the loss on the shipping.

You should not only avoid this scam (It's so common it has a name "the Kubota Tractor scam" after the source listings) but also report it to the site where you found the listing.

The online classifieds (kijiji, craigslist, autotrader, etc.) are all trying to stop these and rely on the reports of their customers to get rid of the scammers.

Thank you for your cooperation.

IS THE EBAY SHIPPING CALCULATOR OFF?

I am losing about 60 cents on every package that I am shipping to the US lately and I don't think that it is due to a quick fluctuation in the exchange rate (I sell in USD). My US buyers are routinely paying under $9 shipping for the light clothing items I sell and I am always paying over $9. Did ebay not update their shipping calculator with teh new rates????

Is this a scam? Car is not on Ebay....I want to buy it but the seller is in Europe, I'm in Canada, and it looks sketchy. Help! Thanks. Mike

"The car is in perfect condition, no damage, never involved in accidents and the mileage is 74,000 KM. It has all the papers and document, the Vehicle Information Package and also the car is certified and e-tested.
The price is CAD $8,100 including shipping and handling to your address (only in Canada). The car is located in Canada but currently I am located in London, United Kingdom, because I just finished the divorce with my husband and i have moved here to my parents for a while. The transaction will be made only through ebay vehicle purchase protection program also for our both safety,i prefer only legit transactions. Where are you located?

PS: If you are interested in buying it please provide me your FULL NAME and FULL ADDRESS & PHONE NUMBER so I can initiate the deal through eBay
I will wait your answer (if you are interested to buy) very soon and i will also explain you all terms for this transaction.
Also i am able to negotiate the price for a fast and quick transaction, If you are a serious buyer!"

I'm just a bit curious as to why some (and it is only some) US sellers advertise free shipping in the US, but add an exorbidant amount for shipment to Canada. I've shipped both ways and the cost isn't THAT different. So, sellers, some of you may be avoiding some good cutomers if this is just a way to pad your profit. I do avoid sales where the shipping seems out of line.
If anyone would like to address this, fill your boots, I'll be watching for it.

orangepixi - I have a rule in that, if I don't know how much the shipping and *handling* costs are and that the seller is not sending the item UPS or by courier, in other words they are shipping USPS, I just don't bid no matter how much I want the item.

In the future, it's a good plan to ask the seller well in advance of the end of auction as they could be away from their computer or have computer problems.

If you don't get an answer, just do a search for the item and see if any more come up. Good luck with it!

Hello, I would like to make a bid on a book and the bidding ends tomorrow morning. There is no shipping listed. I live in Canada and the seller is in the US. Have sent the seller a message but have received no reply. I really want this book but am afraid to bid in case the shipping cost is unexpectedly high. I am used to buying and selling on Etsy where all shipping costs have to be clearly stated.
Any ideas as to what I can expect to pay or how I should proceed?
Thanks very much.

What Is Letter-post (U.S.A. and International)?

Letter-post is the most economical method of sending personal and business correspondence to the United States and international destinations. Letter-post items are composed of paper or other material with the general characteristics of paper (e.g., tickets, photographs, etc.). These items must meet the requirements for Letter-post, including size and weight.

Letter-post must be posted in Canada for delivery outside of Canada. Letter-post items can include:

letters
self-mailers
cards
postcards
other paper that meet these specifications which the Customer chooses to deposit.

The following items may not be sent as Letter-post (U.S.A. and International):

small packets
goods
film, audio or video recording (diskettes, CD, DVD)
unsealed self-mailers and envelopes
items that do not meet the specifications for U.S.A. and International Letter-post
items prohibited by law or defined as dangerous goods in Canada (see “Non-mailable Matter” for more information)

So... when I read the above... I get confused ;(
To me, it reads I CANT use it to send tattoos and wallets, etc :(

ExpeditedCanada/Expedited USA - Currently has a 25% off PO counter price if printed through PP. A good deal.

Forgot to mention that the reason it is such a good deal is that Expedited is both Delivery Confirmed and insured.

You can pay a fee to increase the shipping as high as $5000 and you can also purchase Signature Confirmation.

You have only 45 days to open a Paypal case, but because of timezones it is suggested that the real deadline is 43 days.

Paypal and eBay are firm about the 45 day deadline. Don't beat a dead horse.

You can leave feedback and Detailed Seller Ratings for 60 days. (Again make that 58 days on general principles) Factual calm feedback is more effective than CAPS and Exclamtion Marks!!!!

If you have a credit card attached to your PP account, phone the 1-800 number on the back and start a chargeback. Have all the information about dates and transaction numbers handy for the Customer Service clerk. Make it easy for her to give you the refund.

Remember that credit cards also have deadlines. Some are shorter than others so act as soon as you have your information together. Stay calm.

Keep in mind.

If something really is lost in the mail- most Canada Post services are insured up to $100.

Very very few shipments really are lost. Eventually they show up at the buyer's place -- or yours.

Canada Post is pretty good about insurance claims.

Delivery Confirmation is required by Paypal. It is most important if you are dealing in high fraud /high value/ high testosterone products. Designer purses, iPods, video games.

You are protected by PP against fraudulent non-delivery claims if you use Delivery Confirmation. (Signature Confirmation if the value is over $250).

There is very little to protect you against Significantly Not As Described claims.

Umm what IS regular mail? To send something like a sheet of tattoos or a very thin wallet under 1cm ... can I send regular mail? I read letter mail doesnt allow anything but paper/business stuff.. NOT packaged goods. *banging head*
Do I HAVE to use Small Packet for stuff even if less than 2cm?

If the item is less than 2 cm - even if it is not paper- it can go LP -- either LetterPost (Canada /USA/ International). This cannot be printed out through Paypal. There is no insurance and no Delivery Confirmation. Use at your discretion for things you don't mind replacing.
(A little trick- use really pretty stamps not just the usual flag and queen. They cost the same and engender goodwill)

If it is less than 2cm -even if it is not paper- it can go Light Packet to the US or International. This does not exist for Canada. LP can be printed out through PP. There is no insurance and no Delivery Confirmation. Use at your discretion for things you don't mind replacing. (Another trick- give the shipping invoice number to your buyer and don't tell them what it means. Gives buyers confidence. Discourages scammers)

Regular Package- For Canada. Used to be cheapest service for packages. Insured and Delivery Confirmed. Currently more expensive (usually ) than Expedited (see below).

Small Packet Surface- Insured. Use for USA . NEVER NEVER NEVER use for International.

Small Packet Air-Insured. Use for USA or for International. Slightly faster than Surface. For USA Expedited is about the same price or cheaper. Not Delivery Confirmed but a good choice for moderately priced goods shipped Overseas.

ExpeditedCanada/Expedited USA - Currently has a 25% off PO counter price if printed through PP. A good deal.

ExpressPost International- Is both insured and Delivery Confirmed. Very expensive but can be worth every penny.

I contacted Ebay since i was unable to open a case within the preset parameters because of EBAY system issues regarding an item I purchased and never received. Jan 6th, i tried to open a case (and this date was the deadline to open a case - i tried to open a case ON JAN 6 and the system said i was too late - but in actual fact it was not). I don't know where to go since i,ve emailed about 20 times and can,t get a straight answer from ebay or paypal. Would appreciate someone helping me out to get my money back. I've gone to PAYPAL and they have closed the case because the case wasn't eligible because timelines were not met (because of EBAY system not letting me do something i should have been able to do on Jan 6). I would REALLY appreciate someone's help with this, otherwise after almost 5 years of buying and selling on Ebay, i will be closing my account and reporting this issue to everyone i know.
Hoping to get my money back.

Is that the same as Lettermail? Lettermail is ONLY for paper/correspondence and no goods or packaged items.
So... can I use Letter-post to ship tattoos and wallets to the US? :(

The first concern should be the UID, since you can find your ability to buy and sell restricted if you lose that.

IN the Dispute, state that the seller's phone number is disconnected. State that he has quoted shipping of $175 but has not issued an invoice for that. (Or has he? this is not clear)

State that you want to pay.

I also do not understand the "shipping to the US border" remark. A seller is required to ship to the address that is attached to your Paypal account. Are you asking him to ship to a different address in the USA? If so you have to add that address to you Paypal account or he is not required to ship to it.

Now the possible reason for your problem may be that you bid on an item that was not available to Canadians or which did not state a shipping cost to Canada. Am I right?

The way to handle those situations is first to email the seller BEFORE BIDDING and ask if he will ship to Canada and how much shipping will be.

If he does not reply, or refuses to ship internationally, or ignores you, or is rude, MOVE ON. These are signs that there will be heartache ahead.

After reading alot of these posts...I see that some people are saying that the buyer has not got the item after 30 days or so..For me I have always mailed off my items with a tracking number and/or a signature. You are sure to see if the item was deliverd and these people are not trying to scam you into getting their money back and keeping the item. For a couple of bucks more which can be added to the shipping charges or handeling fees. Post it in your ad that a tracking number and or signature will be given or required. People will think twice before saying they didn't get it. Just adding my 2 cents...

The combined shipping preferences seem to only care about the weights, not the dimensions.

Basically, I would not worry about it yet. Say in your description that you do combine shipping and that bidders should enquire for exact personalized quotes.

It is usually a good idea to build a feedback of at least 10 by buying before attempting to sell on eBay. Zero feedback sellers are scambait.

Go to the New to eBay Board and read the pinned threads about common scams. This is more of a problem than combined shipping.

And I'm with nonStop and randy on this. The vast majority of shipments move quickly and smoothly. Most buyers and sellers are honest.

There are a few that are high testosterone or high maintenance. As crawford says it often depends on the category. Hockey cards? Prickly buyers? Postcards? Lovely people.

Hello, I am having an issue with a seller I want to pay for item but he will not tell me how much shipping is to the U.S. border and I have asked now at least 5 times to send the charges and when he finally did respond he said they were getting back to him he quoted me 175.00 but wont confirm that. I tried to phone him but the number he has with ebay is not in service. Also to add to this problem after all the lack of communication now he has filed a non payment request to ebay so now I am the bad guy when all I tried to do is get a shipping and handling so I can pay for item. Please help

laidlaw - I too have had only about 5 items go lost in transit in over 5,000 items shipped. The risk is pretty small for most low cost items. You just have to realize that a certain amount of loss is to be expected and its a business expense.

To the US, for items thicker than 2cm and less than 1kg I ship small packet surface mail. Other sellers opt for airmail. I find that surface generally arrives only a couple of days later than surface mail. I sell mostly in a category that has a shipping cap in the US...so I'm competing with US sellers who can ship cheaper than my small packet surface rate. Airmail is usually not a viable option for me.

Just to be clear: Regular parcel is a parcel rate in Canada. Lettermail is letter rate in Canada. Light package is lettermail size items that are not paper product going to the US.

I'm a bit confused about combined shipping. I'd like to offer it for some items that I'm selling, but if they are combined together into one package they will require a larger box. The combined shipping preferences seem to only care about the weights, not the dimensions. Is there a way to tell it that it will need to base its new calculations on a bigger box size?

Hi Nancy

I honestly dont worry about it. The amount of lost items I have had is negligible and the 4 that did tell me that it happened I did not question

I have a high base of repeat buyers so I know the majority are happy with the ways I handle my transactions and go from there

Will I get a neg at some point? Maybe, but I will deal with that when it happens

I leave feedback as soon as I receive payment. To me they have done what they were supposed to. I do not believe doing so that I am finished with the transaction and If there are issues after I will deal with it to the best of my ability So far so good

I have only had about 60 sales.. not everyone leaves feedbadk *pout*

about 65 to 70% of people leave feedback

I personally dont worry about feedback. It comes just not with everyone. For the first month or two I asked for it but then stopped and whatever feedback I get it's the others persons choice

I leave feedback and enjoy doing so. But again my own choice

Course ebay has increasingly made it a major issue here and in turn has made a madeup rating system way more important than it should be IMO

Was not always like that here people have fought over it since its inception but lately with ebay stressing its importance like they do many place it higher than I think it should be

I wonder why I hear so much to 'cover my ass' as there are so many bad people out there (buyers) lol.

It at times depends on what one sells There are some areas that have more issues than others

Postcards are not a major problem on ebay but there can be issues and disagreements. I have had some issues on some aspects of it but the majority have been able to be resolved. The others we agreed to disagree. Sometimes its just misunderstanding through the written word and it takes a bit more correspondance to see things clearly on both parties part

It can take time and diplomacy. One is not dealing face to face so there is the chance of problems with any transaction

I find taking the time to correspond with the buyer spending time explaining things etc helps

Some areas here seem to be volitile from the word go and are more challenging

I have been selling offline for over 28 years and the challenges are there too. I'm straight with people there, show that I want to attempt to work on issues that arise when possible etc

Alot of what I do on line I took from my time dealing with others offline

I always keep in mind how I want to be treated by others and apply it to my transactions with others

Does it always work?

Nope

but I try my darndest to correct or rectify the issue so both parties can walk away feeling okay and hopefully happy with the final result

I have only had about 60 sales.. not everyone leaves feedbadk *pout* ... and 2 already were weeks late.. using Expedited. Customers were bugging me and even with Expedited I had no control. EVENTUALLY they got the items.
I kept in contact, gave tracking numbers, called CP, pasted info I found.
So the best thing is to refund the money compared to resending the article if it doesnt show up?
Doesnt hurt to try the cheaper method.. IF I get burnt too much, I will just have to edit my items. NO mass editing for shipping which sucks. Better to try now, than when I have hundreds of items.. and edit them again and again for Shipping.. rofl
Thanks for the great info,

Out of 3600+ items I have sent to people on ebay I have had 3 or 4 items not arrive to their destination. I have had people contact me about 25 or 30 times saying their items have not arrived but that usually is not giving it enough time to be delivered and given abit of time they have all arrived. Usually it's to the U.S. and they have forgotten it was coming from Canada

On the items that did not arrive I asked for a few more days for delivery time which they were agreeable with and when it did not arrive I refunded the full amount including S&H Money Order cost and the cost of the stamp (Have not had it happen when using PayPal)

With the ones that wrote saying it had not arrived and it was the time factor I wrote them and let them know that I stood behind my transactions 100% and if it did not arrive I would make it good with them

Of the 4 that did not arrive 3 have become repeat buyers. A number of customers that had concerns about the delivery time have become repeat customers too. In all my transactions I have never had anything damaged in transit

I sell primarily Post Cards and damage can take place usually to inadequate packing. I buy here and on other sites online and I just shake my head at the way some of the cards have been sent. I have been amazed with some that there was not damage

Mail order is a trust issue and people need the reassurance that one will stand behind their transactions. To show that one needs to keep a open line of communication with their customers. It pays to do so I have ended up with some very good repeat customers

arenkarol - the seller cannot remove the item. If its gone then ebay removed it. I assume that you did not pay the invoice. If ebay has removed the item that means you are off the hook.

laidlaw - I ship $15 items using lettermail and light package regularly. I would not require a tracking number on $15 item. $150 item? Yes, absolutely. There is an element of risk. You have to weigh that against the benefit of more sales with less cost in shipping.

I have some 1 dollar and some 15 dollar items that are small enough to go as LetterPost.
I am new to shipping and Ebay and trying to figure out which way to ship the items. LetterPost seems good for the dollar items and if they claim they didnt get it, can ship again or refund their money?
What about my wallets (14.95) .. it ends up costing nearly as much for postage that is insured, as the cost of the wallet.
NO clue about shipping. I was using Expedited ONLY at first, then learned about Small Packet.. which is insured. Any other shipping methods in Canada? Should I look into FedEx or UPS, etc?

You need to remove the statement "
All of my auctions include the following: "As insurance is offered with every transaction, I am not responsible for lost or uninsured packages" from your auctions

YOu and ONLY YOU are completely and totally responsible for any lost or damaged item---all any of your buyers have to do is to initate a Paypal or Ebay Claim against you and they will win if you can not prove it was delivered

ALSO---negative TOSs are a sure way to get potential bidders to hit the back button and go elsewhere

BUt all that said----Most Canada Post shipping methods come with $100 included insurance---are you not aware of that???

If not---you need to spend some time reviewing your contract with Paypal and reviewing Canada Post and what you get with each shipping method

Need advice for a potentially lost item. How to proceed??

Here are the facts.

In the 1st week of January I sold a few hockey cards to an ebay member. I mailed them out via small packet bubble mailer, regular mail to the US (I am in Canada) 1 day after receiving payment, on Jan 8th.
The bidder has yet to receive the cards as of today Feb 4th and has asked me to inform him how they were shipped, and how I wish to proceed.

All of my auctions include the following: "As insurance is offered with every transaction, I am not responsible for lost or uninsured packages. All auctions over $50.00 USD must be shipped with insurance. Both Canadian and US shipments (over $50) will be shipped via Expresspost (which includes $100 insurance coverage)."

With the bidder having not opted for insurance on the three items amounting to just over $7.00usd, how should I respond to this bidder? It has been exactly 4 weeks to the day since these cards were sent via regualr mail (in small packet bubble mailer). I personally feel like we should wait a little longer to see if they might turn up or perhaps be returned to me for some reason before exploring other avenues...however...

As I have never had this happen with any of the items I have sold in the past, I would appreciate advice from sellers who have dealt with similar situations themselves. Thanks.

I have recently purchased an item from France. the S&H fee for Canada was clearly listed as 21 Euros. I was billed 50 Euros upon receiving the invoice. When confronting the seller I was told that the S&H fee in the listing was for European customers. When I referred the seller to his own listing he removed it from view so that now it is isn't even tracked in MY EBAY.
Am I still responsible for the purchase? I am not new to Ebay and have 100% rating.
Please advise,
Many thanks

marie - yes, in some niches it might work. In other areas of ebay...not so much. And you always run the risk of buying 99c crap for 99c. And as seller you run the very real risk of selling something that you paid $15 for...for 99c. Not a great position to be in.

okay, that is so weird that the response to pmac came in before they even asked....freaky.

Last night I bid on an item, seemed to have won it, a message came up saying seller would not ship to my address. I have a Canadian and a US one listed in paypal. Today I get a message from the seller of the item telling me they got my address from Paypal but the address is not the one I have listed - I know I'm new at this but so far Ebay has only scared me. Thank you reallynicestamps for your reply - so you're saying I can have two addresses and I can pick which one I want an item shipped to?

You may be able to add your US address to your Paypal account as a second address.

Sellers are loathe to ship to addresses which are not attached to a Paypal account because they are not covered by the seller protection rules, such as they are.

Of course you should start at the lowest price you are willing to accept but I think that the 99cent and free shipping concepts are meant mostly to attract hesitant buyers (and sellers) to eBay which must be just about reaching a plateau in both areas now.If I was a seller I'd use some nice but inexpensive wolesale items to see if I like this way of doing business and as a buyer I can tell you that since I live in a big city buying online wasn't an idea I was too keen to try out.You know I thought why not just shop in person but then an item I was willing to buy for 50$ I won for 33 cents so even if shipping is abit steep I'm way ahead and if it turns out the item is as decribed I've saved over 40$ and if its not I'm out not even 10$ so I started on eBay and now I'm looking at his store where the prices are higher so the low price did what it was supposed to do and got me off the fence and looking at other stores and products. Whereas If he'd stayed on a higher level I would have just browsed away and not iven him or the other sellers a chance so these activities while not immediately profitable can lead to better things. If his merchandise is as good as it seemed this time next year who knows how much he'll have earned from my business?

119 - you are selling in Canada but don't want to ship to Canada? You'll need to post from the US site and not include Canada in your ship to section.

mariechantal - you are of course free to have and share your opinion. I tend to agree with femme on the point of 99c auctions - I would never start auctions at 99c unless my item was worth 99c. The best sellers on the boards will tell you to start your auctions at a price you are willing to accept.

Yes, there are some exceptions where starting at 99c will nearly always give you an end price that is acceptable. And in the old days this was certainly more true than today.

As a long time buyer and seller, 99c not necessarily says great bargain..it also says this is likely cheap carp.

In this particular case, the seller was in the wrong. The handling fee should have been stated right in the auction. Its not okay to tack in on later.
Posted by   ( )   on 03-Feb-10 at 10:06:06 EST   Listings
You are right tinsniper but I meant that the buyer was wrong to threaten to renege on the entire deal rather than pointing out this infraction to eBay and giving it a chance to be settled amiably before posting any sort of feedack.
(As far as I know handling fees aren't allowed by eBay especially if they are not mentioned up front:should be part of the shipping costs, don't you think?)
And by the way ,far be it from me to tell anyone how to run their business but since this is called a discussion board I thought it would be fine to express an opposing point of view especially since mine supports a time-honoured practice of successful businesses.

buyer was not wrong. Seller clearly stated in auction shipping & handling $16.99 than went on to ask for an extra 3.00 after auction was over. Not allowed.

Dear femmefan1946,
I had read the original post and the buyer was wrong to act this way but if every merchant who got a difficult customer started looking down on a whole category of customers because of that and thought it best to avoid them there would be no such thing as commerce.People renege on deals to buy million dollar condos,custom-made diamond necklaces and sportscars .That is the risk of doing business at every level.

It would be a good idea to file the Dispute now. If all goes well, you can cancel it and neither you nor the seller will be affected.

Ask the seller within the Dispute for the Delivery Confirmation number. That can be plugged into the Canada Post website and will tell you to status of your package.

We have to go back to January 27 to learn what this is about.

Which was a buyer who won a backgammon game for one cent and then tried to bully the seller over the legitimate $16.00 shipping cost.

I have recently had an issue with a buyer who won a backgammon game(170434406687) from me for a penny, who refused to pay the shipping of 16.99USD and handling fees of 3USD. Buyer even tried to blackmail me into reducing shipping and handling by threatening to leave me with my first negative feedback.

Sellers are free to set up their own business plan, but personally, I'm not interested in customers like that. Which is my perogative.

How long can items sit in Canadian customs??

Is there any way of contacting customs to find out if an item is there?

I have 45 days to file a complaint with Paypal and I'm creeping up on that now, but if the item is sitting in customs, that seems kind of unfair.

Granted, I've emailed the seller twice now without any response :/ Any ideas?

This in reply to femmefan1946 your opinion that 99 cent auctions and free shipping attracts bottom feeders is not only rude but reflects a rather shortsighted opinion.Ever heard of loss leaders?
These options put people who are new to internet shopping at ease with the concept and gives them a chance to see how eBay and their seller works. After winning a few of these from the seller and seeing if he delivers on his promise you can be sure I'll be a lot less hesitant to purchase his BUY NOW items at a higher price . I'm pretty sure that many a customer you'd have would have started out giving eBay this sort of trial run.

Tid bits of info for all buyers and sellers on ebay in canada

here’s some information you probably didn’t know.

Canada Post,

" I learned something over Christmas that I feel compelled to share with you.
This won't change your life dramatically or help you survive the apocalypse but it will save you some $$$.

I recently mailed two identical packages via Canada Post one week apart.
One would think that the postage should be exactly the same...well, let me tell you...

Pkg # 1 was mailed from an actual Canada Post Office. Postage came to $11.74. Since I knew a second identical package would be mailed in about a week's time, I bought sufficient postage for the second pkg while I was there.

When it came time to mail Pkg #2, I went to the post office in Shopper's Drug Mart. I handed the pkg to the clerk to be put in the outbound mail bag, I was informed that I did not have sufficient postage attached. The clerk proceeded to inform me that I needed to purchase and additional $6 worth of stamps. After explaining how I knew exactly what the postage should be, the clerk offered some lame excuse that Canada Post is unionized and they can say and do anything with impunity and if I wished to mail that pkg from Shopper's then I needed to purchase more stamps.

I told the clerk to stuff it and took back my package and headed to the "real" Canada Post Office, where I would raise hell...
Much to my surprise, the Canadian Postal Clerk took my package, weighed it and tossed it in the mail bag, and it was it's way...When I asked if the amount of Postage I had put on the parcel was right she shook her head and said "yup, no problem"...

The Truth comes out:

Canada Post Offices charge postage for packages at the published Canada Post rates.
Franchise locations such as Shoppers Drug Mart can charge whatever they like.
So remember if you regularly mail packages at franchise locations (ie Shoppers Drug Mart,) you are probably paying too much. Franchise locations are found in shopping malls, drug stores and private businesses everywhere. From now on, all of my mailing will be done from a real Canada Post location.
Still perplexed by what I was told by the girl in Shoppers, I fired off an email to Canada Post for clarification.
This is the reply I got from them:

Thank you for your message to Canada Post.
A postal outlet is not a federal government agency and is not owned or managed by Canada Post. For example if the postal outlet is within grocery store or pharmacy it would follow the stores working hours, therefore if the store must be closed, so will the postal outlet inside.
Only Canada Post Depots and Corporate Post Offices are obligated to follow the price of stamps and postal products that are legislated by Canada Post. Any commercial and private establishment may charge extra fees as a convenience to their customers. It is at their discretion to apply additional service fees to products that they sell. We suggest visiting a Corporate Post Office in order to avoid paying additional service charges that corner stores or other establishment may implement on their products.
Regards,
Veronika Strofski

How's that for privatization?

I would let them know that you will only pay by PayPal and if they can't accept that they should cancel the transaction. Also, don't mention this, but don't let them use someone elses PayPal account as that would void your transaction.

linds - different countries, different rules. Some countries allow you to send registered mail via parcel...some allow thicker lettermail than others. Email the seller and confirm shipment of the correct items. Looks like the item you are talking about is coming from the US....first class International...parcels are included up to 4lbs. for that type of mail.

You can use that and it will replace the first invoice

sday - the first thing to do is contact the seller. Ask when and how it was shipped. If its coming from the US, it can take up to four weeks to arrive. You have 45 days to find an item not recieved claim with paypal. Don't let it go past 40 days.

59jijal - contact the seller and ask now. Apologize for any inconvenience as well.

bookgirl - you don't know that it hasn't been shipped...only that it hasn't arrived. Probably not going to get you anywhere with the seller by leaving a neg already either. All actual recourse should be followed through on before leaving feedback. Have you tried calling the seller? Did you read their feedback? There are several complaints about slow shipping. My guess is that you will recieve your item....eventually. If you don't recieve anything within 30 or 40 days of payment date, file an item not recieved dispute with paypal and escalate it to a claim.

margareticamp:

the bill you received from UPS has nothing to do with Paypal/Ebay ---and the money does not go to your seller.

USP has very expensive brokerage fees and anything that is declared at over $20.00 cdn is subject to them and Cdn taxes . You are the importer of goods from another country and are responsible for all taxes, duties or brokerage fees---it is unfortunately not the responsiblity of the seller to inform you of your country's tax laws and what shipping services will cause you to be paying more

Every Canadian Ebayer has experinced what you are now going through and learns the very expensive lesson of never buying anything that is not shipped via the Post Office.

The Post Office if they decided to collect the taxes on this purchase would have charged you $5.00 plus the taxes--they frequently don't bother on small amounts---UPS will collect every time the declared value is $20.00 or over

wen - I only had about 3 money order payments in the last year before they instituted the change...so it really doesn't make much difference to my bottom line. Paypal funded with a credit card offers buyers the best protection out there right now.

I do miss the old days of money orders and bidpay where I didn't pay any fees and there was little risk to me. When buyers were patient and understanding. I also miss the days of items flying off the shelves. Those days are long gone sadly. This is the new ebay and the new reality.

Is it just me? Or are there other sellers out there who are chocked with E-bays policy of not allowing sellers to request Money Orders for payment? E-bay says it is for security reasons? I think it is because they are making outrageous fees from forcing us to use PayPal. The fees here have made me sell less and less all the time at e-Bay.

frances - you can ask the seller to cancel but they are under no obligation to so do. If the seller refuses to cancel, they may perform an unpaid item dispute, leaving you with a non payment strike on your record. Enough of these and ebay will suspend your account.

Your best bet is to apologize profusely to the seller and ask again to be let out of the deal.

baddog you can't offer money orders but you can accept them of the buyer offers. New rules on ebay.com and .ca

jason - scroll down, I think you'll see that your seller already posted here. What we missed originally is that the seller did not include their handling fee in the listing. You are under no obligation to pay any more than what was quoted in the auction. File a non performing seller dispute. The seller is using the shipping calculator and the handling fees should be included in that calculation.

I won the auction and then received an invoice for 19.99 and when I asked the seller they told me that they were charging an extra $3 for handling charges. When I disputed this and asked to mutually cancel the transaction they told me they'd be turning me into Ebay for being a shady buyer and then sent me a request to cancel and a message saying I'd been added to a shady buyers' list and "good luck ever buying something on ebay again!" I do not think that I am a shady buyer. the shipping and handling charges were stated in the auction and I was fine to pay that. Not the extra $3 that he added on. Am I in the wrong or is the seller??

tinsniper and sammie

It can be very cheap to ship to Canada, but not if the seller wants to have Delivery Confirmation. Those services start somewhere around $14.00. As sammie learned.

Without Delivery Confirmation the seller is disadvantaged if a Dispute should arise.

Before bidding, ask the seller if he will agree to ship by First Class Mail and ask about his charges for this service. Remember that the seller, to protect himself, might include a self-insurance charge in his S&H fee.

Then if he says no or if the fee is still too high, move on.

All in all, I think I would agree with nonStopchatter on this one. Part of my reason is that sportscard collectors seem to be a high testosterone bunch who have a hard time admitting they might be in the wrong.

Don't even try for a Mutual Cancellation. Just refund, eat the fees, BLOCK the original bidder and relist.

Oh, and keep the paperwork about the delivery and return in case he gets really high maintenance and decides to whine to Paypal.

Hey. Just looking for a little advice.

I recently sold a hockey card to a member in the US. I'm in Canada. I ship very quickly and a day after receiving prompt payment, I shipped the card. The day after I shipped it however I received a message from the member asking me to hold off sending the card (if I hadn't yet already done so) and to mail it to a different address than the one provided via ebay and paypal as that was an incorrect address. I responded saying that the card had already been sent to the original address provided and left it at the that for the time being.
Well, the card was returned to me in the mail yesterday and I now would like to know how to proceed in my next message to this member. It seems obvious to me that I have to invoice him for the shipping costs again before sending this card out to the other address. Any thoughts on what to do if he refuses?
Thanks.

Importing Goods into Canada

The Following charges apply if the purchase is over $20 Canadian (not including shipping)
Taxes Duty Brokerage
GST and PST(if applicable) based on the value declared on the customs form. If the seller declares a higher amount than what you paid, you can apply for a refund/adjustment. Items made in North America are duty free under NAFTA. Otherwise you can use My Border Pro to see the duty rate or you can contact Border Information Services. If sent by mail - $5 ($8 if priority post/express mail).

UPS Ground rates are based on the value of the item.

Fedex Ground does not publish their rates but they appear to be a bit less than UPS Ground.

Items sent by UPS Air have no brokerage charges. Fedex Air seems to have a $7 charge.
This information is prepared to the best of my knowledge. You can view the Canada Border Services Agency publication on Importing Non-Commercials Goods by Mail here.

Correct me if I am wrong...Shipping from the US to Canada..some are just way to EXCESSIVE...Why do people do that. I just purchased a ring...he said shipping was 22.50..when I got it the post mark was 13.77. I know that we are all trying to make a few bucks...but do it on the item...not the shipping...When I see excessive shipping...I just go to the next item...People are greedy and out for the all mighty buck...I have never gouged on shipping...or my items that I have sold...So fed up with people thinking we are stupid enough to pay excessive shipping charges...

Hey Casteofnicola. Your first mistake was to assume that this is my first sale ever. I was on Ebay long before you ever heard of ebay, believe me I know I checked your profile. And if you knew anything about shipping costs you would know that a backgammon game would not only cost a few dollars to ship.... Infact its exactly 17.29 to ship to the buyer in question. So to ask for 19.99 in total for shipping and handling is not excessive as you put it... So pleasse castleofnicola, do your due dilligence before making comments about something you know so clearly little about.

This is why 99 cent auctions are a Bad Idea, they attract bottom feeders. So does Free Shipping in my opinion.

For this buyer, start an Unpaid Item Dispute on Day 4. He will get a Strike and you will get your fees. If he replies to the dispute, he can leave feedback. You can REPLY to feedback without actually leaving feedback yourself. Calm factual Replies are the most effective.

Put the buyer on your Blocked Bidder List. The Strike he gets from the UID will put him automatically on thousands of BBLs.

Set your Seller Preferences to automatically Block bidders with Strikes. These guys often have a track record.

kmosaby - you have a couple of options. Your clean break option would involve asking seller to mutually walk away from the deal. You are certainly not obligated to pay any more than was originally quoted.

Buyers need to understand the deal with shipping and handling fees. First off shipping is very expensive, and a seller has the right to charge hadling fees to cover the fees charged by ebay, paypal and any material required in packaging your product. Buyers who have never sold anything have no clue of the fees charged to sellers for trying to earn a dollar. I have no problem with sellers passing on the fees to the buyer. Its buyers like this that ruin it for the rest. I have since requested to have the transaction cancelled, but I wonder will the buyer still be penalized with an unpaid transaction. I hope so...

Between January 22-23rd I won 6 auctions with the same seller. During the auctions I emailed the seller and asked about a shipping discount. The seller emailed me back and stated $6.99 for the 1st item, and $.99 for additional items. I thought great. I will bid on some more. I went to pay after 6 aucttions, and it showed $44.44 for shipping. I emailed the seller and stated the mistake. The seller emailed me back and said that she made a mistake. It was $6.99 for the 1st item, and $4.99 for additional items.Plus she said that she wasn't making any money more or less because of the low bids. If I knew this from the beginning, I would not have bid on anything else from this seller. Plus $6.99 for the 1st item and $4.99 for the other five items is $31.94, not $44.44. This seller not only has made a mistake by telling me his shipping discount, but now is trying to over charge me for shipping. I will not pay this amount. I don't think it will cost even $31.94 to deliver 6 pieces of jewelry to me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

bigbad - paypal is a business, they charge fees for their services. It offers the best protection for buyers...so its popular. Its worth the fees.

cancore - have you filed a claim with paypal yet? Did you return the item with delivery confirmation?

santaria - you have to select US as a destination that you ship to in the sell your item form. Then you can include US in your shipping area, select Xpress US (this might be cost prohibitive for your buyers however).

PayPal used to be free when receiving cash payments, but I haven't used my account to receive payments in probably over a year. I just sold two small items (one for $10 and the other for $6) and got dinged the 2.9% + $0.30 for receiving account balance or bank account PayPal payments in my personal PayPal account. What gives? You can no longer receive cash payments for free? If that's the case, why even have a personal PayPal account at all?

Small packet is insured up to $100 but is not Delivery Confirmed. Given the probable demographic of your buyers, you can expect a few phoney "Item Not Received" claims. If you do not want to hit Canada Post for this, add a little extra to your handling fee as self-insurance.

You need at least 10 positive feedback to use the Buy It Now feature.

It is not a good idea to start selling here until you have those magic feedback. Start by buying a digital postal scale.

Read the New to eBay Board thread Pandora's Box about scams.

Zero feedback sellers are scambait.

Wait until March and all the treadmills that people got for Christmas will be in the secondhand athletic goods stores for 25 to 50% of the original price. Most will be practically new.

In addition to PST & GST, freight and a $25 + customs brokerage charge, you will pay duty if the machine was not made in Canada/USA/Mexico/ Chile (NAFTA free trade zone).

Not a good deal.

The $36 additional fee is from UPS and does not go to the seller. It includes GST and/or PST and also brokerage fees. Any items over $20 CDN are subject to tax and brokerage fees. UPS has high brokerage fees. Scroll down to the big red and blue post for details.

Hi: I purchased an item on the 19th of November, and was told that it would be shipped via UPS and I needed a street address as they do not ship to a Post Office box. I supplied them with my street address and P.O. box number. A month went by and I still did not have my item. Somehow, I was able to obtain the phone number of the Store and I spoke to a rep. and they stated the item would ship that day, a month later. I forgot something, I received notice that the parcel had shipped on the 23rd of Nov.
Anyhow, I finally received my item on the 11th of Jan. 2010, and I had to pay an additional $36.00, on top of the $20.00 I already payed.
Now my point is this, by the time I received it, the 45 days had already gone by. So I guess I am SOL.
Anybody have any suggestions?

You will have to pay taxes on it coming into Canada. You will also have to pay a brokerage fee to clear it through customs. the amount of the brokerage fee will depend on how it is shipped. Also if you but it from the US and there are problem and you have to return it, then things become even more expensive.

Hi everyone,

I live in Ottawa and am thinking of buying a treadmill from a US based company. It's $1499 on ebay and 2099 + tax in Toronto. Will I have to pay any taxes or duty on this? I imagine since the package is 285 lbs. that I will need to pay like $400 shipping but it's still cheaper then buying locally? Any help would be great!

If you use UPS Air, the shipping will be higher but the customs brokerage fee is lower. The duty and taxes are paid to Canadian officials at the border.

By clearing it yourself you avoid the customs brokerage fee. This will take about an hour not counting travel time. So take the cost of your time into consideration.

Sometimes you have money, sometimes you have time. Choose one.

How does one go about prepaying the fees with UPS to minimize the fee? Or perhaps clear it from customs myself? Anyone with experience in this regard or can point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance,

Forgot to mention, when you contact Canada Post to make the insurance claim, use the telephone. The telephone clerks are efficient and can authorize your cheque before your hang up if you have the necessary information for them. (Basically your shipping invoice number)

If you shipped by any method except LetterPost/Light Packet, your package was insured.

You cannot make insurance a line item. You either include it in your handling charge (or for most CanadaPost services in the postage) or don't.

If you are using LP to ship, include a small amount (10-25 cents) on every LP shipping and handling charge as "self-insurance". Those dimes will cover the occasional loss.

Don't use LP for anything that would hurt to lose. My own limit is $25. Anything over that goes Expedited.

If you are close to the border, you could drive your products there and ship them through USPS. Remember that you must declare them and pay US duty as you cross the border and that you will have travel expenses. You may also need a post office box.

You could also put part of your shipping cost into your asking price, reducing the apparent cost of shipping. Your asking price may be less attractive than now and you will pay higher listing fees. I have found that buyer's dislike shipping fees that are higher than asking price, which may offset the dislike for higher openings.

Or you could stop shipping to Europe, since you are not getting many sales and your European customers are not happy.

Hi.
I am a seller (in Canada) who are in need to regulary ship parts to europe. I have some troubles to find competitive shipping rates. Most of my parts are in the 4kg to 7kg range. Often the boxe are large like 90cm x 30 x 40.
As example it cost 195.00 to ship a 6.5 kg box of this size to Germany. (canada post) When I compare to USPS rates it is near 40% more.
I lost alot of sales because of that .
Is there any way to do better ??

Soryele - PayPal does not obligate sellers to refund return shipping fees. Those costs are on you. You have to pay them and no one has to pay you back for them. That's what at your expense means - you pay for it. Once PayPal sees that the item has been delivered through the tracking, you'll be refunded the amount you paid to the seller.

There is nothing wrong with a buyer and seller communicating directly. It does not have to go through eBay messages.

NonStopchatter - there is no such thing as pre-approved bidders anymore. eBay only allows that for high profile listings not us average users.
Posted by   ( ) on 19-Jan-10 at 10:13:46 EST   Listings
soryele - I answered you below. You are correct, in this case you are going to be out some money. I'm not speculating on your **should** questions...its irrelevent. You've been given the facts and you've got a decision to make. Keep the item or return it at your expense. Those are your two options. Yes, it sucks. As noted before you brewed a very risky cocktail with this one.

Seller from Germany sent me the wrong items valued 365 USD shipment tax included. My claim was covered for initial amount paid with clear condition to return the items. To return from Canada to Germany the items and have a receiving confirmation, I have to pay almost 300 USD which amount is not covered. EBay and PayPal accepted to cover initial amount but nothing related to return fees. There is no insurance that seller will pay me back the return fees. If I would do it and seller will not pay me back the fees then I will loose 300 USD fees return. There is no fair treatment for me in this case. I paid in front all money when I bought the items. EBay and PayPal do not protect me in any way. Seller promised me via E-mail sent to my private E-mail address (not through eBay!!!) that I would be paid when items will arrive back to him. Should I trust him? Should eBay take an action against this seller? Should PayPal pay more attention to this case?

NonStopchatter: thanks!

question 2: I had a buyer win 5 items which I had shipping combination. $4.00 for the first item and $2.50 for each additional auction won. He somehow got an invoice for $12.16 which is $1.83 short in which the total should have been.(4.00 + 10.00) He paid the wrong invoice and owes me $1.83. I can not figure out how ebay got that total for combined shipping. What can I do to receive the $1.83?
Here is one item 290390199016 which is identical price and shipping description as the other 4 items.

soryele - yes, you must ship the item back at your own expense. I'm not sure why you say paypal has done nothing...they have decided in your favour. You will be out some money...that is just the way it is with mail order returns. If you bought something at the shopping channel and wanted to return it, that would be on you. Yes, it sometimes sucks but that is the risk you take with online purchases. Couple that with the high value of this purchase and the international nature and you brewed up a risky cocktail.

kegsy111 - Relist the item as a private auction with that particular bidder as the only pre-approved bidder.

I just got a message from PayPal as follows: Transaction Date: Nov 25, 2009
Transaction Amount: -$365.00 USD
Your Transaction ID: xxxxxxxxCase Number: PP-xxxxxxxx
We have determined that you are entitled to a refund for this transaction.
To receive your refund, you must follow these steps:

1) Return - Return the item to the Seller at the following address:
xxxxxxxxxxxxx

2) Online Tracking - Ship the item to the Seller using any shipping service that provides tracking that is viewable online, such as those offered by USPS, UPS, FedEx, or DHL
3) Online Proof of Delivery For transactions equal to $250.00 or more in value, obtain online proof-of-delivery from the shipping service in the form of a signature from the recipient.
4) Provide Info - Provide PayPal with your shipping information within 10 days of receiving this email. Please note, if you do not provide the shipping information within this timeframe, your claim will be denied and you will not receive a refund
5) Cost of Shipping - You are responsible for paying the shipping costs to return the item to the seller.

So , it would be my loss. I paid $365US ( $65 being the shippment fees from Germany to Canada, Ontario ) and now I have to pay the shipping fees back to Germany to return the item . It's that correct? We, buyers, are the loosers ? The seller (Germany) did not cooperate with me from the begining and there is no action taken by PAyPal on this seller.

matchbox2022 :

If I was your buyer I would be pissed off too. You need to review your contract with Paypal and Ebay. You and only you are totally responsible for having an item arrive to your buyer's door in the exact same condition as they purchased it. If it does not---you are responsible for refunding them the total amount paid.

Making a statement on your auction page "No Refunds" is totally incorrect if dealing with paypal.

There are some criteria the buyer has to do if submitting for a refund for 'Not as Described'===but in the end they will win and Paypal will take the money from you

----and a laptop needs more shipping protectiion then a bubble envelope. Wrap, with lots of bubbles, box--double box with lots of padding between the 2 boxes.

Pay the buyer their money---phone Canada Post and submit a claim for the $100 included insurance and any additonal insurance you may have added

Not really. It depends on when it was mailed, and if it gets held in Customs, and whether there is duty or sales tax due and the phase of the moon.

However, you have 45 days to file an Item Not Recieved dispute with eBay/Paypal. If the seller is not communicating 30 days is long enough. Day 43 is the latest you should file due to time zones.

How long should I wait for a refund from Canada Post of a canceled shipping label

So around the 8th of December 2009 I canceled two shipping labels that I ordered online from Canada Post (first one I forgot to add the insurance value and 2nd the zealous postman told the weight was off 100 grams on a 7kg parcel )
Now every time I check my account balance in Paypal the status of both transactions is still: "pending refund"

For how long should I wait? Is there something wrong? IIRC when I canceled the labels, I read somewhere that it can take up to 2 weeks for a full refund

Do guys have any idea?

colin - this is a scam. There is no skidoo.

jam - you could try giving them a call. Use the advanced search link (right beside the regular search bar at the top of every ebay page), then click on find contact info. Ebay will email you the seller's phone number.

edress - not that I know of.

waitress - sorry, I don't understand your question.

croc - did the buyer ask for and did you provide a shipping quote? If yes, then you should stick by your quote. If handling fees were to be added then you should have mentioned that in your original quote.

In short, yes, in some cases depending on your specifications in your preference section of my ebay, the buyer can alter the invoice or add their own shipping amount. If you would like to eliminate that possibility you should fix it in preferences in your my ebay page.

Can buyers put in their own shipping amount when they win an auction and not wait for the seller to send an invoice?, even if they have been given an estimated mailing cost before the auction ended, what if the seller has charges a handling fee to add to the shipping cost?.
I have a buyer that has done this did not wait for me to invoice her put in the estimated shipping and did not consider that I might have other selling fees ie: handling fees. Help please I have been selling since 1998 and I am sick of buyers doing this. With the new eBay rules the buyer always wins, the seller can no longer leave a negative for a bad buyer even anymore - rediculous.

pichoni - it should be very simple to input your information into the Canada Post shipping calculator at their website. Are you certain there won't be any issues using this item across the border?

matchbox - you owe the buyer at least a full refund of his original postage costs and his purchase price. The best sellers on ebay will make sure that the buyer isn't out a single penny when the problem arises from the seller end. If I were to ship a laptop I would be sure to double box and pack well so it doesn't have room to move or shift.

Once you have the laptop back in your possession, refund your buyer and file a claim with Canada Post. You may get a refund depending on the outcome of their investigation.

Laptop sales and purchases are very high risk. If selling an item such as this I would only offer it locally so no shipping is required and the buyer has a chance to inspect it first before purchasing.

pichoni1 what I typically do is actually go to canada post to get the item kind of "test shipped" see how much it is for the farthest place I'll ship to per country, aka. canada and the states for two charges, and just charge that. I find it's usually the best compromise.

Hey guys, I have a question before it results in a dispute.

I sold an item as a no returns item on a laptop and someone bought it, however I put it in a bubble wrapped envelope with air bags for padding and somehow canada post managed to damage the item. This is the first time it's happened to me, and the guy told me that any claims for damage to the item APPARENTLY has to happen on my end. He said that the laptop screen failed to work which I believe if it got damaged.
Anyways, instead of continuing to talk to me, he has sent the item back, and expects a full refund INCLUDING the amount he had to pay to ship it back.
Should I be taking this in stride or actually do something else, I've never had such a peeoed person to deal with before.

Hi there

1) I never use Canada post boxes and bubble envelopes. If you don't have a good supply of used boxes, then I have found uline.ca to be the cheapest. Depending on where you are located there may be better choices. Bubble envelopes can also be bought from uline, or places like walmart or staples are definitely cheaper than Canada post.

2) Depends where it is going. Within Canada, yes. Outside of Canada you are probably looking at light packet.

3) Yes. Never let the buyer dictate terms.

4) If you don't have one, get a ventureone card from Canada Post unless you plan on doing all your postage through PayPal.
